SUMMARY:Turtle Nest Sitter Training (and Making Nest Protectors)
DESCRIPTION:Nesting turtles are very vulnerable to road traffic and very sensitive to disturbance. Female nesting turtles are often injured while on route to their nesting sites\, and they also can be easily deterred from nesting if frightened or harassed. Then\, if successfully nesting\, the turtle nests are very quickly predated by small mammals that benefit from living near humans\, such as foxes\, skunks and raccoons. This is why almost all turtle nests in the Land Between bioregion (Ontario’s Highlands) and southern Ontario\, are destroyed\, and eggs eaten within 24 hours of a turtle laying eggs.  Turtle Guardians are volunteers that are trained in stewarding and monitoring nesting turtles. They are effectively “on call” throughout nesting season (from June to mid July) and will be dispatched to sites where nesting turtles need support.  This workshop trains willing nest sitter volunteers in monitoring and protecting nesting turtles and their nests\, and includes identification of turtle species\, of various stages of nesting behaviours\, and in protocols for protecting turtles during nesting. \nThe second half of the workshop (the final half hour)  also provides training and guidance for building and installing nest cage protectors in acceptable locations\, and in monitoring nest sites.  Please register as a volunteer Nest Sitters before attending the workshop.  \n\n\n \n \n Turtle Guardian Training Workshop\n Summer 2021 TG Activities \n \n Name*email*phone number*enter area code 705-000-0000Have you registered as a Citizen Science volunteer on our online form\, for your chosen activity yet?*\n \n Yes\n \n \n No\n workshop chosen*RR: Thurs. SUMMARY:Phrag Fighters - Survey and Removal Training
DESCRIPTION:Invasive Phragmites is a large grass-like plant that is taking over Ontario’s wetlands and reducing biodiversity. The plant colonizes ditches\, bays and wetland pockets. It grows in such thick mats that turtles\, frogs\, and other animals cannot move through their native habitats. The plant is also tall\, and blocks sight lines along roadsides. In the spring Phrag Fighters locate areas where the plant is growing and harming local habitats. Then\, as are part of a team of 3-4 people\, Phrag Fighter teams adopt one or two wetland areas where they are responsible for removing the invasive plant using best practices (so that the seeds don’t spread). Phrag Fighter teams go out between one and three times each summer between June and early August to spade the plants\, bag them in dark bags\, and transport them to locations or landfills to be deposited.   This workshop teaches Phrag Fighters how to identify the plants\, record locations of the plants in EDDMaps\, and then how to remove the plants using the best practices which help to stop the spread of the plant. Phrag Fighting is hard work but also fun and rewarding! Phrag Fighters is part of The Land Between’s Community Science Programs. \nAre you part of a Phrag Fighter team or looking to join one?  Join a phrag team here \nSign up for this workshop below: \n\n \n \n Phrag Fighters\n Phrag Fighter Volunteers \n \n Name*First and LastPhone*Email*\n \n Phrag Fighter Training Dates*Wednesday\, March 10th @ 7pm (surveying only)Thursday\, March 25th @ 7pm (surveying only)Thursday\, April 22nd @ 7pm (surveying only)Tuesday\, May 25th @ 6:30pm (both surveying and removal)Saturday\, May 29th @ 10am (both surveying and removal)Thursday\, June 3rd @ 6:30 pm (both surveying and removal)Saturday\, July 17th @ 1pm (both surveying and removal)

SUMMARY:Road Researcher Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Road Researchers are volunteer Turtle Guardians that monitor chosen sections of roads once a week- and record turtle observations\, as well as help turtles that are nesting or crossing the roads. Road Researchers are invaluable to turtle conservation efforts in Ontario. They are the first responders and the data they collect helps us understand and estimate local turtle populations\, as well as find and prioritize mitigation hot-spots (areas where we need to install signage\, underpasses/tunnels or other helpful solutions that allow turtles a safer way across the road). \n \nRoad Researchers can choose from priority road maps that are provided\, or choose their own routes. They can also monitor by driving\, cycling or even walking. It is recommended that Road Researchers are part of a team of at least 2 members. Road Researchers are enrolled at Level 3 Guardians. This workshop provides training in turtle identification and protocols for monitoring the sections of roadways that you have chosen. Volunteers have to be over the age of 18 to participate in this program and have registered as Road Researchers before participating. \n\n \n \n Turtle Guardian Training Workshop\n Summer 2021 TG Activities \n \n Name*email*phone number*enter area code 705-000-0000Have you registered as a Citizen Science volunteer on our online form\, for your chosen activity yet?*\n \n Yes\n \n \n No\n workshop chosen*RR: Thurs. SUMMARY:Wetland Watchers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Most turtles in Ontario live in wetland habitats. Wetlands are the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Over 70% of Ontario’s fish and wildlife depend on wetlands at some point in their life cycles. Wetlands are a treasure trove of so many amazing plants\, birds\, fish\, and animals. Over 70% of wetlands in the southern half of the province have been lost to development of one kind or another. Wetland Watchers are volunteer Turtle Guardians that monitor wetlands each week from late June to September and record wildlife observation to help biologists understand the significance of the habitat for wildlife in the area. Volunteers become Level 2 Turtle Guardians. This workshop teaches you how to identify key features and indicator plant species\, basic wetland birds\, frogs\, as well as turtle species and their behaviours. \nPlease register as a Wetland Watcher before attending: https://www.turtleguardians.com/wetland-watcher-registration/ \n\n \n \n Turtle Guardian Training Workshop\n Summer 2021 TG Activities \n \n Name*email*phone number*enter area code 705-000-0000Have you registered as a Citizen Science volunteer on our online form\, for your chosen activity yet?*\n \n Yes\n \n \n No\n workshop chosen*RR: Thurs.
