We had another great field season and we couldn't have done it without all of our incredible staff and volunteers! The changes in temperature and light-period signal

The changes in temperature and light-period signal to turtles that it is time to prepare for hibernation and begin their journey back to their annual hibernation site. Turtles stop eating to clear their stomachs of food that would otherwise rot as their metabolism slows down during the winter months. While this is similar to hibernation, turtles actually undergo a process called brumation. Instead of entering a "deep sleep", as with hibernation, turtles remain awake and can become active on warmer days. Their metabolism and activity slows down, and their heart rate drops to just a few beats a minute!⠀

Nests are still hatching! Make sure you help these little guys to the nearest body of water whenever possible! It is important to never remove any hatchlings from the wild! In the first few years of their life, turtle hatchlings imprint "mental maps" of their home range that they use for the rest of their lives! These early years are crucial for their survival as adults!⠀

It has been a very strange year in terms of weathe

It has been a very strange year in terms of weather patterns (this is what the science community has warned about regarding climate change), and as a result, turtle migration patterns are also a bit strange.Turtles are still moving and migrating, when in past years, most would be tucked in for the winter in their hibernation sites. We are still seeing turtle nests hatching and larger turtles moving slowly along to hibernation sites. So if you see a turtle on the road, help them in the direction they were heading by picking them up or by using a car mat, shovel, or blanket (if you don't know how to safely carry a snapping turtle), and never lift them by their tails. Watch out for tiny moving "rocks" with tails and help these hatchlings to the nearest wetland. If you see an injured turtle, and if it is safe to retrieve it, take note of the exact location, put them in a dry ventilated container,, and call the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre at 705-741-5000. They will arrange transportation for the turtle to get to their hospital.⠀

Turtles might still be on the move! The unseasonably warm weather and wet conditions are perfect for turtles travelling to their overwintering sites. Turtles return to the same sites year after year and some snapping turtles have been found to hibernate within 1 meter of where they hibernated the year before!⠀

This is turtle island and today we lay our hearts

This is turtle island and today we lay our hearts down and hang our heads for our brothers and sisters who have suffered unimaginable terrors at the hands of colonizing governments and leaders and who, still to this day, are experiencing the ripples of that genocide and continue to be oppressed under an archaic patriarchal regime embodied within the Indian Act of Canada- and this, despite their kindness and kinship shown to the European forefathers and despite the promises made and agreed upon between all, which have been broken time and time again. These promises were to share equally and in kindness the land (not the water which was never ceded and remains part of the inherent rites and kinship roles of indigenous peoples). These understandings also included keeping and honouring the distinct rights of indigenous people to govern themselves and to have equal voice in all matters related to the land. These understandings were what facilitated and were embodied in the making of the Great Wampum and the signing of the Royal Proclamation, which transitioned to the British North America Act and then the Constitution that we know today.

The Land Between has walked hand in hand with indigenous nations and peoples since we began forming the foundations in 2006 to create the charity as it is today.

We are deeply saddened by the past and current affairs affecting our dear friends who we consider family and true forebears in this country and we thank the Creator for their current health and strength despite these trials and tribulations and pray for true and meaningful restoration, reparation, and reconciliation.
