Happy October 1st! It's officially Spooky Season AND hibernation season! Turtles hibernate in the same spot every year, so if you see a turtle crossing the road in the spring, they will most likely be crossing that same road in the fall. Keep your eyes open for anybody making their way to their hibernation sites and help them across the road in the direction they were travelling!

Unprecedented numbers of turtles are killed on our

Unprecedented numbers of turtles are killed on our roads each year and if we lose 20% they will likely be extinct in the next 20 years. Turtle Guardians and The Land Between charity have been taking inventory of high traffic crossing sites that correspond to culvert locations in the Haliburton Highlands. Ideal fencing for turtles directs them under roads through culverts while still allowing wildlife to get off the road. This fencing is often a concave style, installed below grade and flush with the ground, and typically costs $40-$100 a metre making each site $10,000 +. Turtle Guardians will be testing out a more affordable solution by repurposing steel, food-grade barrels! This costs $5-7 a metre and fit all the necessary criteria. And now thanks to our amazing donors and supporters, we will be fully designing and installing the first two prototypes this year in Haliburton! A very big shout out and thank you to So Soya+, who supplied a discounted source of barrels, Garry Mercer Trucking, who donated the shipping of the barrels from Toronto to the Highlands, and Highlanders Auto Body, who is cutting the barrels for free! We also want to thank the amazing, caring folks in the Haliburton Roads Department who will help us retrofit and install this fencing, and of course our dedicated staff and volunteers! The beautiful, warm weather this week is perfect for outdoor chores and for turtle watching! While Jeremiah tends to the garden, she will be keeping an eye out for turtles making their way to their overwintering sites. Some turtles travel multiple kilometres to get to these sites so if you see any turtles on the road, I'm sure they would appreciate help crossing! Always move a turtle in the direction it was travelling and only help if it is safe for you and other drivers. ⠀

On this last official day of summer we want to ref

On this last official day of summer we want to reflect on the incredible field season that we had this year and all the staff that made it possible! Under our wildlife permits we helped 100+ turtles off roads, excavated ~50 nests, and released 768 hatchlings! It is a privilege working with such incredible animals and to be surrounded by like-minded people. We have enjoyed every second of this summer and look forward to continuing this work (hopefully) for many years to come!⠀

Turtle season is not over yet! As the weather starts to get cooler, turtles are on the move once again travelling to their hibernation sites for the winter. Keep your eyes open and if you see any turtles trying to cross the road you can help by moving them in the direction that they were travelling! But only if it is safe to do so!⠀

Our last little snapping turtle hatchling was released on Thursday and it was bitter sweet to see him go. As much as we would love to keep a few of these guys with us, we know that they belong in the wild. It is more important than ever that you don't remove any turtles from their natural habitat, all turtles in Ontario are considered Species at Risk and every individual is needed to help grow the population. If you do see any hatchlings out and about, you can help by moving them to the closest slow moving body of water and report your sightings to us! ⠀

Meet our new team member- this little snapper was

Meet our new team member- this little snapper was one of two found wandering around Salmonier Nature Park in Newfoundland! Snappers are not native to NFLD so park staff took them in and have cared for them during these months with COVID restrictions. And just last week the two turtles (one male and one female) were carefully couriered to us, arriving at Toronto Pearson Airport in custom made carriers. Thanks SNP staff for taking such good care of these endearing turtles! We can’t release the turtles into the wild because we don’t know their point of origin and turtles removed from their territories may not survive in new areas because they cannot make a new mind map of hibernation sites, feeding areas or migration routes. It’s also possible that these turtles were taken in as pets illegally when they were very young - so they never imprinted a territory at all. So now these two are part of our turtle ambassador team and we are asking for help with naming them! Let us know if you have any snapping turtle name suggestions!⠀
