Lakes are large water bodies; larger than 11 acres; and deep habitats; deeper than 1m, so that the light does not penetrate the water and no emergent plants grow.
Rivers can be wide or narrow, fast or slow flowing; they can be inlets or outlets to ponds or lakes.
Wetlands can be found at the edge, entrances, or exits of both these habitats.
Snapping turtles, Map turtles, Painted turtles, and Wood turtles are found in and around lakes and rivers.
