Expert Oversight Expand

Turtle Guardians was founded by Leora Berman, the COO of The Land Between charity, who has worked as a Conservation Ecologist since 1997, and has founded several large conservation programs in Ontario. The effort has been supported by a team of amazing partners such as experts from the Toronto Zoo, Scales Nature Park, and individual herpetologists at various educational institutions and across the globe.

Research to Support Recovery Science

Research Scope Expand

We conduct research and analyses to support the estimating impacts, population dynamics and trends, and to identify conservation or mitigation hotspots and needs. Road Researchers, and Wetland Watchers collect data that supports this science.

Working to reduce and reverse losses

Mitigation & Incubation Expand

We map, design and pilot road mitigation measures; and we excavate, incubate and head-start hatchlings to help recover losses. Today we are the third largest turtle incubator in Ontario. Our Volunteer Nest Sitters are essential to this program and its success!

Turtle Guardians has an education arm

Educational Offerings Expand

We create curriculums for elementary schools; run classes and workshops; and create resources for the public at large. We also run Turtle Camps for kids.

Volunteers Save Turtles

Turtle Guardians are the first on the scene to help our shelled friends. They are community members, and kids, and volunteers that are helping to prevent the extinction of our turtle populations. Volunteers collect invaluable information that supports our research and conservation efforts. They also raise the profile of our collective work.

There are many ways to get involved and become a Guardian. Check out our volunteer opportunities and training resources:
