Low water and drought conditions are a cause for concern in northern reaches of North America, and Ontario's Highlands. Many turtles, and especially Common Snapping turtles require stable oxygen levels, and a depth of water under the ice to shield themselves in the winter. In late fall, turtles reach annual overwintering sites, and will not readily move from these faithful sites. Shallow waters can be a threat; they may result in ice entombing a turtle. Your help to alert us to sites, or to monitor overwintering turtle habitats and also brumating turtles, can make a difference!
