Dotty and Pauly
Dotty and Pauly are Spotted Turtles; they are critically Endangered in Canada. They came to us from Scales Nature Park- and as they were born in captivity and as a result could not be released into the wild without special reasons and permits. We adopted them to teach people about the illegal pet trade and about some of the precious species in Ontario. They are also in captivity as potential breeders in the future, if the population needs bolstering. In that case, their offspring would be released under a recovery permit.
We think that Pauly is a male and Dotty is female; but they are still too young to tell. A female Spotted Turtle would have red eyes and more red around their faces, but these distinguishing features only appear after sexual maturity. For now these two live comfortably together in their specialized tank, that gives them lots of enrichment for hiding, and climbing. Once they reach maturity they will have their own distinct tanks.
