Road Researcher Training
May 8, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Free
Road Researchers are volunteer Turtle Guardians that monitor chosen sections of roads once a week- and record turtle observations, as well as help turtles that are nesting or crossing the roads. Road Researchers are invaluable to turtle conservation efforts in Ontario. They are the first responders and the data they collect helps us understand and estimate local turtle populations, as well as find and prioritize mitigation hot-spots (areas where we need to install signage, underpasses/tunnels or other helpful solutions that allow turtles a safer way across the road).
Road Researchers can choose from priority road maps that are provided, or choose their own routes. They can also monitor by driving, cycling or even walking. It is recommended that Road Researchers are part of a team of at least 2 members. Road Researchers are enrolled at Level 3 Guardians. This workshop provides training in turtle identification and protocols for monitoring the sections of roadways that you have chosen. Volunteers have to be over the age of 18 to participate in this program and have registered as Road Researchers before participating.
