Turtle Guardians work to save turtles and their habitats. We connect kids, people and communities with nature, which inspires them to take action and heal the world! A program of the Land Between charity #805849916RR0001

So You Found a Turtle? Here’s how to help (link)

  • Always take note of the location and, unless injured and needing care, never relocate a turtle.
  • Record and report its location through the Turtle Guardians website form here, or through our iNaturalist project
  • Contact Turtle Guardians by calling 705-457-1222 or texting 705-854-2888

WHO ARE TURTLE GUARDIANS?

Turtle Guardians are everyday people like me and you!

ALERT

Help Us Save Grace, the Ancient Turtle in Haliburton, and Her Shelled Friends!

Turtles, wildlife and nature are in jeopardy when municipalities don’t have necessary controls in place.

A wetland was filled in where Grace, the 125+ year old turtle with one eye and the oldest breeding female snapping turtle in Cottage Country (and some of her friends) may be hibernating. There is about a 50/50 chance that she hibernates at the site in question.  This site is also special because there are other Threatened species here making the area critical habitat, and warranting protection under the Endangered Species Act. But the wetland is also zoned Environmentally Protected by the municipality. It is important also for flood control. While the bylaw officer and town staff have done what they can, this municipality does not have the standard provisions in place to protect the areas they zoned and to back up their own policies. In fact, they are the only municipality amongst their peers without these tools.

Listen to the interview with our COO Leora Berman, and Gabrielle Holmes from CanoeFM

Read our summary report: Dysart et al’s Empty Nest- A Review of Zoning in Cottage Country

We need your support! Not only to perhaps save Grace, also any of her kin that are within basin in question, and to conserve all other wetlands and wildlife areas in Haliburton, today and for the foreseeable future.
