In 2017 Ontario lost a huge amount of turtles due to unprecedented numbers of turtles on roads and subsequently killed. The warm and wet weather made turtles more comfortable to travel overland. Turtles take about 60 years to replace themselves in the environment and less than 0.1% of turtle eggs laid, survive to make it to adulthood. Therefore adult turtles are precious and invaluable to the continuation of the species. The loss in 2017 was devastating causing The Land Between (head of Turtle Guardians) to announce a turtle crisis. Press Release.Turtle Crisis
Since that time, The Land Between with the support of our partners, approached the Ontario Trillium Foundation and received a grant to "grow" Turtle Guardians into a province wide program available for kids and landowners too, to help us monitor and save Ontario's turtles. Now we need your help!
The T5 campaign will raise funds to support all the elements for turtle recovery:
- Turtles (food, heat and hydro for our turtles-in-care)
- Teaching (school curriculum, summer camps and year-round workshops to support kids becoming involved and across communities)
- Tracking (recovery science of field-tracking, biological sampling, and assessing health of Ontario's turtle populations)
- Tunnels (mapping, assessments, and implementation of turtle underpasses/tunnels)
- Trauma (care and rehabilitation for injured turtles)
You can support the campaign with a direct donation
